Bringing Belgian Charm to Grocery Shelves: A Whimsical Packaging Design for Bruges

Bruges started as a beloved Utah bistro known for its authentic Belgian waffles and sauces. With its retail debut, the brand needed packaging that could carry its one-of-a-kind personality into grocery stores. The challenge was to translate the family’s quirky, joyful Belgian spirit into shelf-stopping design that celebrated heritage without feeling old-world or overly serious.

We rooted the design system in the concept of a “Belgian Wonderland” — an imaginative world inspired by the cobblestone charm of Mechelen Old Town, folk art and the playful energy of classic storybook facades. The waffle boxes feature custom illustrations of a bustling street scene anchored by the iconic stepped-gable architecture of Bruges, while fun details — including a plane dropping cinnamon and a cyclist balancing a giant fork — add personality and warmth.

For the sauces, we borrowed the same architectural backdrop but transformed it into canals of creamy Andalouse and Aioli, complete with tiny floating frites and sandwiches. The result is a cohesive visual world that makes the products instantly recognizable while spotlighting their Belgian authenticity and artisanal quality.

By infusing the packaging with storybook charm and family-driven personality, we helped Bruges stand out in a crowded category — and bring a little magic from their table to everyone else’s.
